Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines · Itinerary Guide · Updated March 2026
Mactan Itineraries: 2, 3 & 5-Day Plans.
How you spend your time on Mactan depends on what you’re after. A 2-day visit is minimum to do island hopping justice. Three days lets you add a Cebu City day trip or diving certification. Five days opens up island-to-island exploration. These itineraries assume you’re based on Mactan but willing to day-trip.
The Quick Version
2 days: Island hopping (Hilutungan + Nalusuan) + local day. 3 days: Island hopping + Cebu City heritage walk + diving/shopping. 5 days: Island hopping + Cebu City + Moalboal day trip + resort recovery day.
The 2-Day Mactan Plan
Perfect if you’re connecting to Bohol or have limited time. Focuses on what makes Mactan unique: island hopping.
Day 1: Island Hopping
Morning: Hilutungan Island (30 min from shore)
Meet your operator at 7am, depart 7:30am. Arrive Hilutungan by 8am. Snorkel at the marine sanctuary (2 hours). This is the standout — crystal water, fish abundance, walls of coral. Entrance fee ₱200 per person. Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Breakfast is on the boat (included in tour).
Midday: Nalusuan Island (45 min from Hilutungan)
Travel to Nalusuan. Explore the fish sanctuary walkway (unique feature — wooden boardwalk over the reef). Second snorkel session (1.5 hours). Lunch on the island (fried fish, rice, drinks — local standard). Entrance fee ₱100 per person.
Afternoon: Return to Mactan
Depart Nalusuan 1pm, back to your resort by 2:30–3pm. Relax at the resort, dinner at a local restaurant in Newtown or Maribago (if not staying at resort strip).
Day 1 Budget
Island tour: ₱2,500–3,500 per person (includes boat, guide, entrance fees, basic lunch). Snorkel gear rental: ₱150 if you don’t bring your own. Meals/drinks: ₱800–1,500. Total: ~₱3,500–5,000 per person.
Day 2: Local Mactan & Departure
Morning: Mactan Shrine or Guitar Factories
Visit Mactan Shrine (site of the Battle of Mactan, 1521). 30-minute walk from central Mactan or ₱100 Grab ride from Newtown. Spend 45 minutes here. Alternatively, visit a guitar factory in Maribago to see craftspeople at work. Many factories allow walk-ins and sell directly.
Midday: Lunch at a Local Seafood Restaurant
Grab fresh grilled fish, shrimp, or fried squid at Maribago seaside. Cost: ₱300–600 per person for a good meal with drinks.
Afternoon: Shopping or Beach Time
SM Seaside City if you need souvenirs, or relax at your resort. Evening flight/ferry departure preparation.
Day 2 Budget
Attractions: ₱0 (shrine is free). Meals: ₱700–1,200. Transport: ₱200–300. Total: ~₱900–1,500 per person.
The 3-Day Mactan Plan
Adds a Cebu City day trip, which gives you culture, heritage, and better food beyond resort bubbles.
Days 1 & 2: Same as 2-day plan
Island hopping Day 1, Local Mactan Day 2
Follow the 2-day plan above.
Day 3: Cebu City Day Trip
Early Morning: Grab to Cebu City
7am Grab from your resort to Cebu City (30–40 min, ₱250–350). Head to the Basilica (1566, oldest church in the Philippines). Free entry. Spend 30 minutes exploring.
Mid-Morning: Fort San Pedro
Historic Spanish fort. 20-minute walk from the Basilica. Entrance fee ₱75. Spend 45 minutes wandering the grounds.
Lunch: Carbon Market or Restaurant
Carbon Market is chaotic, energetic, and sells everything (seafood, produce, flowers). Lunch at a nearby restaurant or street stall. Cost: ₱200–400 for a meal. Alternatively, go to a nicer restaurant in Cebu City proper (SM City has food courts, ₱300–600 per meal).
Afternoon: Museums or Shopping
Cebu City Museum (entrance ₱100, 1 hour) or browse SM City Cebu for souvenirs. Last Grab back to Mactan around 4pm (arrive resort by 5–5:30pm).
Day 3 Budget (Cebu City)
Transport to Cebu: ₱500–700 roundtrip. Attractions: ₱175–250. Food: ₱800–1,500. Total: ~₱1,500–2,500 per person.
The 5-Day Mactan Plan
Gives you depth. Island hopping, Cebu City, a day trip to Moalboal (different vibe, sardine run dive spot), and recovery time.
Days 1 – 3: Island Hopping + Local Mactan + Cebu City
Follow the 3-day plan above
Island hopping, local exploration, Cebu City heritage walk.
Day 4: Moalboal Day Trip
Early: Grab or Ceres Bus to Moalboal
Grab is expensive (₱1,500–2,000 one-way) but direct. Ceres Bus (from Cebu City) is cheaper (₱150, 1.5 hours) but slower. Leave 6am, arrive Moalboal 8am. This fishing village is famous for the sardine run (best June–September, but some fish year-round).
Snorkeling or Diving the Sardine Run
Book a dive or snorkel tour with a local operator (₱1,500–3,500 per person, includes guide, boat, lunch). The experience: thousands of sardines moving like one organism. Not guaranteed year-round, but incredible when it happens. September–April has the highest probability.
Late Afternoon: Kawasan Falls (Optional)
40 minutes from Moalboal by Grab (₱300–400). Waterfalls and freshwater swimming. Entrance ₱50. Spend 1.5 hours here if you want. Otherwise, head back to Mactan.
Evening: Return to Mactan
Grab or bus back (arrive 5–7pm). Dinner and early sleep.
Day 4 Budget (Moalboal)
Transport: ₱2,500–4,500 roundtrip (Grab) or ₱300–400 (bus). Dive/snorkel: ₱1,500–3,500. Meals: ₱600–1,200. Total: ~₱4,500–9,000 per person.
Day 5: Resort Recovery or Diving Certification
Option A: Relax at Resort
Sleep in, swim, spa, eat. Enjoy the resort without rushing. Minimal cost (food + activities included with resort).
Option B: Diving Certification
Most resort strip hotels offer Open Water PADI certification (2–3 days). Start Day 5, finish Day 6/7 if you extended. Cost: ₱3,000–5,000 for certification + dives. Includes training, equipment, and open water dives.
Extending to Bohol or Beyond
If you’re combining with Bohol, book a ferry from Mactan to Tagbilaran (Bohol) via 12Go. Ferry is ₱300–500 per person, takes 50 minutes. Departs from Cebu Pier 3 or Mactan ports.
