Getting to Mactan Island: Routes, Ferries & Transport.
Mactan is connected to the mainland by two bridges and accessible by ferry from Cebu City. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport sits directly on the island — which means you land on Mactan before you even know you’ve arrived. This guide breaks down every route, costs, and timings for 2026.
Flying in: CEB Airport is on Mactan — you’re already here. From Manila: 1 hour 25 minutes, from ₱2,000 return with Cebu Pacific/AirAsia. From Cebu City: Two bridges or ferry. Ferry is cheapest (₱35), bridges are fastest (30 min by Grab). Airport to resort: 15–25 minutes by Grab, ₱150–300.
Domestic Flights: Manila to Mactan
The most popular route is Manila (MNL) to Mactan-Cebu (CEB). Flights are frequent, cheap, and operate with three reliable carriers.
The Flights
- Cebu Pacific Air: Multiple daily departures. Flight time 1 hour 25 minutes. Fares from ₱2,000–4,000 one-way during off-season; expect ₱5,000–8,000 in peak season (March–May). Check-in baggage is 20kg on basic fares; add luggage if needed.
- Philippine Airlines: Premium option with slightly better service. Similar schedule and flight time. Fares typically ₱3,000–5,000 one-way. Checked baggage usually included.
- AirAsia: Budget carrier. Rock-bottom fares (₱1,500–2,500 one-way) but strict baggage limits. One 7kg carry-on only on the cheapest tickets. Add checked baggage à la carte.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for the best prices. Flights departing Tuesday–Thursday are cheaper than weekend flights. Early morning and late evening slots are also discounted. Use the airline websites directly rather than third-party booking sites — Philippine carriers often have better fares on their own platforms.
Arriving at CEB Airport
Mactan-Cebu International Airport sits on the northern tip of Mactan Island. When you land, you are already on Mactan — you don’t need to cross any bridges to get to the airport. The airport is relatively modern and efficient. Immigration and baggage claim typically take 45 minutes even on busy flights.
From Cebu City: The Two Bridges
If you’re coming from Cebu City (arriving by ferry from Bohol, or already staying in the city), two bridges connect Cebu City to Mactan Island.
Mactan-Mandaue Bridge (Eastern Route)
The older of the two bridges, but usually faster due to lighter traffic. Connects Mandaue City (east Cebu) directly to Mactan’s north shore. Distance: about 2.5km. Travel time: 15–20 minutes by car in light traffic, 30–45 minutes in peak traffic (7–9am, 5–7pm weekdays).
Marcelo Fernan Bridge (Western Route)
The newer, longer bridge. Spans from Cebu City proper across a larger stretch of water. Distance: about 8km. Travel time: 20–30 minutes in light traffic, 45 minutes to over 1 hour in peak traffic. Tolls are approximately ₱45–60 depending on vehicle type (Grab absorbs this, usually).
By Grab
Grab works reliably on Mactan and is the easiest option from Cebu City. A ride from Cebu City centre (SM City Cebu, Fuente Osmeña) to the Mactan resort strip costs ₱200–350 depending on traffic and distance. Estimate 30–50 minutes. The app uses the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge typically for speed, though the route depends on your destination.
Peak hour traffic (7–9am and 5–7pm weekdays) is serious. Buses and trucks clog both bridges. If you’re timing a connection, factor in 45 minutes minimum from Cebu City centre. Avoid rush hour if possible.
Ferry from Cebu City: The Budget Route
The ferry is the cheapest way to Mactan if you’re already in Cebu City, though it’s slower and less predictable than the bridge routes.
Route & Schedule
Ferries depart from Cebu Pier 3 (also called South Port or Cebu City Port Terminal 3) in the south end of Cebu City proper. The crossing goes to Muelle Osmeña Port in Lapu-Lapu City, on Mactan’s western shore. Journey time: 20–30 minutes, depending on sea conditions and stops.
Ferries run roughly every 1–2 hours throughout the day (approximately 5am–8pm). During rough seas (June–November typhoon season), departures may be delayed or cancelled — always confirm before heading to the pier.
Cost
Economy fare: ₱35–50 per person. It’s genuinely cheap. Ferries are typically packed during rush hours and less crowded mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

The pier is south of downtown Cebu City, near Reclamation Area. By Grab from SM City Cebu: ₱100–150, about 20 minutes. From downtown hotels: ₱80–120, 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.
Airport to Resort Strip: The Final Leg
From Mactan-Cebu International Airport to the main resort areas on Mactan.
Grab (Most Convenient)
Airport to East Coast Resort Strip (Lapu-Lapu): 15–25 minutes by car. Cost: ₱150–280 depending on time of day and exact destination. The resort stretch runs from Shangri-La Mactan in the north to Crimson Resort in the south. All are accessible in this timeframe. Grab operates at the airport and is the most reliable option.
Airport to Mactan Newtown (Lapu-Lapu City): 20–30 minutes. Cost: ₱200–320. Newtown is more modern and urbanised, with restaurants and nightlife, versus the more isolated resort strip.
Download the Grab app before you land and set your destination. Signal is available in the arrivals area. Taxi touts at the airport will aggressively try to sell you rides at inflated prices (₱500–800). Ignore them and use Grab — you’ll pay half the price and avoid negotiation hassles.
Alternative: Hotel Transfers
Most mid-range and upscale hotels (Plantation Bay, Dusit Thani, Crimson) offer airport transfers for ₱600–1,200 per vehicle (not per person). These are pre-arranged and reliable, but cost more than Grab if you’re solo. Useful if arriving late at night when Grab surge pricing kicks in.
